Class Absences for Final Four

March 28, 2022

Students and Faculty,

Go Cats! Having our Men’s Basketball team in the Final Four of the NCAA tournament is exciting and a special occasion for our campus. Therefore, as we have done for our past appearances, we will make some academic accommodations for those attending the next game in person in New Orleans.  Please read through this email carefully about your obligations if you desire to attend the next game.

Students

  • Students attending the Saturday, April 2 game in person will be excused from classes on Friday, April 1, to allow for travel to New Orleans.
  • All missed work must be made up and you will receive no grade penalty for missing class. Please contact your instructors as soon as possible to make arrangements to make up missed work.
  • Faculty may assign alternative assignments—such as summarizing readings, responding to discussion posts, watching a recording of the class and writing a summary, or other suitable activities—to replace any missed in class activities.
  • If (or should I say when) we make it to the final championship game on Monday, April 4, students attending the game in person will also be excused from classes on April 4 and 5. Again, all missed work and in-class activities must be made up and there will be no grade penalties.

Faculty

  • Please see the Student section above on how to handle students attending the next set of games in person.
  • Faculty desiring to attend the game in person on Saturday, April 2, may cancel classes on Friday, April 1, to accommodate their travel plans. You should have a makeup class, such as providing a recorded lecture, providing an alternative assignment or activity, or another appropriate substitution. You may also choose to move your in-person class live online via Zoom or hold your online class as regularly scheduled if that works with your travel plans. The class must be kept at the same scheduled day/time.
  • If (or again should I say when) we make it to the final championship game on Monday, April 4, faculty attending the game in-person may cancel classes on April 4 and 5. Again, you should have a makeup class as described above.

I love the excitement on campus, and I hope to see more celebrations in our future. As always, please be careful when celebrating. The eyes of the world may be on our campus, and I expect the highest level of maturity and professionalism from our faculty, staff and students during any celebration.

Sincerely,

Craig Wheeland, PhD
